Asthma prevention and control

Asthma education and support for Boston residents. Support includes free home-based services, community outreach, and training.

About the Program

Asthma is a serious problem in our community, but it can be controlled. Asthma is a cause of preventable hospitalization among children. Caring for children and loved ones with uncontrolled asthma often leads to missed workdays for caregivers. This page offers important asthma prevention and control resources for Boston residents.

Our program brings Boston’s schools, child-care, medical and housing providers, City, State, advocates and national agencies together to address asthma.

We work with individuals and agencies to address the medical, environmental, social, and economic factors that affect the high asthma rates in Boston.

Our living environment can impact our asthma and we can work with you and your doctor to figure out the best plan to ensure a healthy living environment for you and your loved ones.

Check out our free asthma services and ask your doctor to make a referral to one or both programs. Having support from your medical providers is essential for proper asthma management and control.

Breathe Easy at Home

Works with your landlord to make repairs they are responsible for.

Sometimes home environments can trigger asthma in children. Medical professionals can refer these patients for housing inspections. These inspections are available for Boston renters. Breathe Easy at Home Update: ISD has been conducting virtual inspections. They remain in regular contact with both residents and landlords to correct violations.

The program addresses issues that a landlord may need to fix. Issues can include:

  • Mold
  • Moisture
  • Leaks
  • Pests (rodents and roaches)
  • Holes where pests enter
  • Broken bathrooms/kitchen and vents
