In traditional Mexican homes, every November 1 and 2, departed family members are remembered with altars lovingly decorated with photographs, papel picado, offerings of fruit, favorite food and drink, candles, and masses of fragrant orange marigolds, la flor de cempasuchil.

Marigolds, with their bright orange color and scent, are thought to guide the spirits home. The City of Boston’s altar in Copley Square will contain 500 pots of marigolds, grown from seed and tended to since August by Boston Parks Department horticulturalists. You can upload photos of your loved ones to have them displayed at the altar:

Boston Artists-in-Residence (AIR) final celebration

The final celebration for this year's cohort of artists-in-residence will be held on November 30 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the BSA Space.

November 30, 2018
Event Date2018-11-30T17:30:00 - 2018-11-30T20:30:00

For the past year, seven artists have dedicated themselves to the exploration of City of Boston policies, processes, and practices through a lens of resilience and racial equity. As members of the Boston AIR cohort, artists developed multidisciplinary projects addressing civic concerns, such as:

  • environmental racism in climate change response
  • community activism led by older Bostonians, and
  • gaps in historic narratives in City archives and memorials.

Some have worked alongside City subject matter experts and co-designed a program, while others have worked with community centers and other partners to understand municipal policy impact on a personal level. Through Boston AIR, the City of Boston is providing support and structure for artists as engaged citizens, leading thinkers, and change-makers in our community with the belief and trust that artists can and do influence and shape our City.

Refreshments will be served, and the event is free to the public. All ages are welcome!
