Garvey Park groundbreaking

Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Boston Parks and Recreation Commissioner Ryan Woods will join local residents and sports leagues at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, September 30, to break ground on improvements to Garvey Park.

    The celebration marks the beginning of a $5 million dollar, single-phase project. The project includes $785,000 of funding from the Community Preservation Act and a partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation specifically for accessibility and a dog park.

    Among the planned improvements: 
    • Space for street hockey, basketball, flag football, men's and women's lacrosse, Babe Ruth senior baseball
    • Two play areas for ages 2-5 and 5-12
    • A seating area and shade structure
    • Viewing terrace at the field house
    • Dog park, accessible entrances

    Parkman Playground opening

    Join Mayor Martin J. Walsh and local residents for the unveiling of over $1.7 million in improvements at Parkman Playground in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Jamaica Plain.  Refreshments provided by HP Hood.

    Dating back to 1924, the revitalized Francis Parkman Playground was renovated by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department with site improvements including an inclusive play structure and springers for children ages 2 to 5, a larger inclusive climbing structure for ages 5 to 12 and amenities including a dish swing, embankment slide, exercise station, drinking bottle filler, splash pad with runnel, picnic shelter, and a trike loop/mini basketball hoop area. Other improvements include new fencing, site furniture, LED lighting, trees, and plantings.

    The U.S. Army’s national touring pop-rock band As You Were is comprised of active-duty soldiers. They play approximately 230 shows yearly across the country at high schools, colleges, and music festivals.

    Performances include covers of top 40 music and original songs from the band’s brand new album, scheduled for release this summer.

    Open Newbury Street

    On July 14, August 25, and September 15, 2019 shoppers, diners and pedestrians can explore new restaurants, local boutiques, and international brands — or rediscover your favorite Newbury Street gems on a street transformed and free of cars. Find meaning in the melodies of local musicians, challenge your friends to an outdoor game, or simply stroll along enjoying the festive atmosphere of Open Newbury Street. Celebrate Newbury Street, a uniquely treasured place in the heart of Boston.

    HOW TO GET THERE

    There are multiple MBTA stations in the vicinity of Newbury Street including Arlington, Copley and Hynes on the Green Line and Back Bay Station on the Orange Line and commuter rail. Ride your bike to Newbury Street and lock it to bike corrals stationed throughout the event. Take BlueBikes and dock at stations located throughout Back Bay. Multiple parking garages are located in the Copley Square area south of Boylston Street.

    ADDITIONAL DETAILS

    Newbury Street will be car-free from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. from Berkeley Street to Massachusetts Avenue. The intersections of Exeter Street, Fairfield Street, Gloucester Street and Hereford Street will be car-free with the remainder of the intersections open to traffic for public safety access. Parking will be restricted beginning at 5 am.

    BUSINESS PARTICIPATION

    The City of Boston encourages all businesses to take part in Open Newbury Street by activating outdoor spaces and taking advantage of the reclaimed public space. All outdoor activations are restricted only to those businesses that have brick and mortar locations on Newbury Street.
