Wake Up the Earth festival

The Wake Up the Earth Festival began in 1979 when a group of local neighbors and activists banded together to stop the Interstate 95 expansion into Jamaica Plain.

May 4, 2019
Event Date2019-05-04T12:00:00 - 2019-05-04T17:00:00

The annual Wake Up the Earth Festival (WUTE) takes place each year on the first Saturday in May and is currently attended by well over 10,000 individuals of all ages. The festival began as, and still is, a celebration of what can be accomplished when people of all traditions, cultures, ages, and beliefs come together. The event features four stages that include:

  • music and dance performances
  • popular theater
  • the Youth Stage, and
  • story telling for all ages.

In addition to performances, the festival features more than 50 craft, nonprofit, and food vendors. The festival is anchored by a massive parade (with branches that start in Jamaica Plain Center and Roxbury) with several thousand people marching. A great many individuals, local artists, community groups, and schools join forces every year to create this unique community collaboration.

November 4, 2017
Event Date2017-11-04T11:00:00 - 2017-11-04T14:00:00

Did you know pumpkins past their prime can be composted with your leaf and yard waste? Join us at our family-friendly event where you can safely smash and compost your pumpkin after Halloween. Learn more about how you can compost at home, see the composting process in action, and eat cider donuts at the Mattapan Ecovation Center!

Dilapidated sadface pumpkins welcomed and highly encouraged.

If you can't make the event, you can put your pumpkin out with your leaf and yard waste. Check your schedule through the City's Trash Day app. Please remove all decorations from the pumpkin (paint is OK!) and place it with leaves in a large paper bag or barrel labeled YARD WASTE. Pumpkins placed curbside on days without leaf and yard waste collection will be picked up and trashed.

This event is a collaboration between the City's Departments of Public Works and Environment, the Mattapan Ecovation Center and City Soil, and the Boston Nature Center.
