Marigolds, with their bright orange color and scent, are thought to guide the spirits home. The City of Boston's citywide Dia de Muertos altar in Copley Square will contain 1,000 pots of marigolds, grown from seed and tended to since August by the Boston Parks Department Horticulture Unit.

We invite you to send us photos of your loved ones to be displayed on the altar at Copley Square Fountain. And, of course, we hope you will join us in Copley Square on November 1 and 2 to celebrate Dia de Muertos and those whose memories we keep alive.

We are grateful for the help of:
  • Lena Park Fab Lab in crafting papel picado
  • the good folks of Morgan Memorial for contributing hundreds of photo frames, and
  • the hundreds of Bostonians (near and far) who have contributed photos and memories to make the City of Boston’s ofrenda so special.

Smith playground reopening

The celebration marks the completion of Phase 1 renovations for the playground in Lower Allston.

November 2, 2019
Event Date2019-11-02T11:00:00

Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Boston Parks and Recreation Commissioner Ryan Woods will join Harvard University’s  Executive Vice President Katie Lapp as well as local residents and sports leagues for the grand reopening of Smith Playground.

At just under 15 acres, Smith Playground is a popular park located in Lower Allston with facilities for baseball, softball, soccer, street hockey, and basketball.  The celebration marks the completion of Phase 1 renovations with a total budget of $6.4 million, including $3.3 million funded by Mayor Walsh's Capital Improvement Plan, $2.1 million from the Harvard Allston Public Realm Flexible Fund, community benefits from Harvard University, NHL Hockey is for Everyone, the Continuum project on Western Avenue by Samuels & Associates, and the Boston College Neighborhood Improvement Fund for the recently dedicated General Casey Amphitheater named in memory of Major General George W. Casey.

Phase 1 of the master plan includes a new state-of-the-art playground with splash pad, irrigated multipurpose field for soccer, lacrosse, and other field sports, new street hockey rink and basketball courts with lighting, passive community area, flexible amphitheater for small and large events, Western Avenue frontage improvements, “wheel-friendly” areas designed for use by skateboards and bikes with skate-able paths and walls, Boston’s first pump track, walking paths with pedestrian lighting, and associated utility work.  In addition, the improvements include a gift from Boston Properties: the Daniel DeLue sculpture “Quest Eternal,” formerly located in front of the Prudential Center, and slated to be installed in the park.  Design for Phase 2 of the project (baseball and softball fields) will begin this fall.

The November 2 opening celebration will include refreshments provided by HP Hood LLC, the official dairy sponsor for the Boston Parks and Recreation Department’s 2019 park openings.

Boston Common Master plan website

As "America’s First Public Park" and an oasis in downtown Boston, Boston Common is one of the most treasured green spaces in the world. The goal of the Master Plan is to create a Common that will serve the people of Boston and visitors alike while protecting this special place for decades to come.

Over the past several months, we have been deeply engaged in a conversation about the future of Boston Common. The level of engagement was significant:

  • 4,000 people completed the online survey
  • We held eight "Mini Common" pop up events on the Common and out in the neighborhoods of Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, Beacon Hill, Roxbury, Chinatown, Back Bay, and East Boston.
  • Nearly 1,200 people engaged in the “Mini Common” pop up events.

During this "town hall" style meeting, the public will have the opportunity to:

  • hear an overview of the Boston Common Master Plan project
  • provide general feedback
  • preview the initial survey results
  • comment on specific topics drawn from community responses, such as security, programming and events, accessibility, and more, and
  • learn about next steps.

How can you participate? The Open House format will include opportunities for active participation as well as a slideshow presentation. The presentation will be made available on the project website, where you can also take the survey. This is the first in a series of open houses, so please check the website for updates.

We are deeply grateful for your continued commitment to providing meaningful feedback for the Boston Common Master Plan, which is so incredibly important in shaping the future of the Common. We look forward to seeing you at this and future open houses and outreach events!
