About Amplify GSA
Mayor Michelle Wu and the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ+ Advancement present Amplify GSA to promote, support, and protect Genders and Sexualities Alliances (GSA) in Boston schools.
LGBTQ+ Advancement is developing relationships with schools across the City. We want to learn about what LGBTQ+ students need to feel more supported in their schools. AmplifyGSA builds connections across differences by engaging with LGBTQ+ youth and their allies, teachers, school administrators, and families.
Genders and Sexualities Alliances, or GSAs for short, are student-run school groups. They unite LGBTQ+ and allied youth. The goal is to build community and organize around issues impacting them in their schools and communities. These groups are legally protected in Massachusetts. GSA has historically been known as "Gay-Straight Alliance." However, the newer, more inclusive terminology is “Genders and Sexualities Alliance.”
Research confirms that the presence of a GSA in a school can:
- have a positive and lasting effect on student health, wellness, and academic performance
- protect students from bullying and harassment based on sexual orientation or gender identity, and
- have a long-term, positive impact on the school climate for all students.
