Boston Bikes
The Boston Transportation Department works to make bicycling fun, safe, and convenient.
We help plan and design streets for bicycling, manage the City's public bike share program, and add bike parking. We also host fun rides and events and teach Bostonians of all ages how to ride safely and responsibly in the City.
We help all Bostonians experience the joys of biking and support the growing community of cycling in Boston.

Public Bike Share
Bluebikes is our public bike share, owned and managed by the City of Boston in partnership with neighboring municipalities. We own more 250 stations and around 2,500 bikes.
Bluebikes is jointly owned and managed by Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Everett, and Somerville, and operates in 10 municipalities in greater Boston. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is our title sponsor. Our bikes are sturdy, maintained by professional mechanics, and have adjustable seats.
We offer discounted passes for residents who receive public assistance or otherwise have qualifying incomes. Passes are only $50 for a full year or $5 for 30 days.
You can sign up for the discount pass online by entering your EBT card number. Note: you cannot use SNAP benefits to pay for your bike share pass.
DON't HAVE A SNAP CARD?We accept proof of participation in a wide range of public assistance programs.
In September 2022, Mayor Wu announced a 100-station expansion of the bike share system in Boston.
These new stations will fill gaps in high-demand areas, making our system more reliable for riders. We'll also add stations in neighborhoods to improve access to the system overall.
Today, more than 90% of Bostonians live within a 10-minute walk of a bike share station. We aim for a 3- to 5-minute walk in our denser residential neighborhoods. We also want to be sure all major transit stations and stops are served by bike share stations.
We will share more about our expansion plans in 2023.
BIKE PARKING
We want everyone to have a safe and convenient place to park their bike—at their residence, place of employment, school, or other everyday destination.
