Boston Landmarks Commission Public Hearing

1. 23.0959 BLC - ARLINGTON STREET CHURCH, 352 BOYLSTON STREET, BOSTON, MA 

Arlington Street Church applies to reduce the height of the Parish House chimney and remove the North and South Sanctuary chimneys and to cap these decommissioned chimneys below the roof line. Slate and copper flashing will be installed over the openings to match the existing slate roof. BLC Presentation link

2. 23.0388 BLC - THE RESTORATION OF THE CHILD FOUNTAINS AND LANDSCAPE IMPROVEMENTS TO THE ARLINGTON STREET ENTRANCE

The Restoration of the Child Fountains and Landscape Improvements to the Arlington Street Entrance. BLC Approved project on 11/22/2022 and asked applicants to return with lighting details and pavement scoring plan. BLC presentation link

In order to expedite the review process, the commission has delegated the approval of certain work items, such as those involving ordinary maintenance and repair, restoration or replacement, or which otherwise have a minimal impact on a building’s appearance, to commission staff pending ratification at its monthly public hearing. Having been identified as meeting these eligibility criteria and all applicable guidelines, the following applications will be approved at this hearing:

► Applicants whose projects are listed under this heading NEED NOT APPEAR at the hearing. Following the hearing, you will be issued a Determination Sheet to present at the Inspectional Services Department (1010 Massachusetts Avenue) as proof of project approval when applying for permits. ISD personnel will send an electronic copy of your building-permit application to the commission staff for review. (To avoid potential confusion, the text of your building-permit application should be consistent with the project description given below.) Commission staff will accordingly authorize the execution of the work, attaching any applicable provisos, reflecting the relevant guidelines and precedents. 

PLEASE NOTE THAT FOLLOWING ISSUANCE OF THE DETERMINATION SHEET NO FURTHER CORRESPONDENCE WILL BE ISSUED for the applications listed below. The electronic building-permit application as annotated by commission staff will constitute your Certificate of Appropriateness; this will be valid for two years from the date of the hearing. 23.0408 BLC - FILENE’S COMPLEX CLOCK - 426 WASHINGTON STREET, BOSTON 

APPLICANT:  Kathleen McNeil

PROPOSED WORK:  Applicant has contracted with Allen Architectural Metal for a bracket repair and general restoration on the Filene’s Clock on the Washington Street facade.

21.0612.0145 BLC -JAMES MICHAEL CURLEY HOUSE - 350 JAMAICA WAY, JAMAICA PLAIN

APPLICANT:  George Robert White Fund

PROPOSED WORK: Install storm windows as per drawings. Approved by the BLC in 2021. Applicant is requesting an extension on this approval.

23.0955 BLC - OLD CORNER BOOKSTORE - 3 SCHOOL STREET, BOSTON, MA

APPLICANT: Lisa Lewis

PROPOSED WORK:  Install new rooftop HVAC equipment to replace older decommissioned equipment.

23.0884 AB - 34 KINROSS ROAD, BOSTON, 02135 (Aberdeen)

APPLICANT: Ryan Clancy

Install 4 replacement windows - windows will have 8/0 and 6/0 grid pattern to match existing - grids will be between the glass -  Exterior color will be bronze to match existing - confirms with district guidelines.

DISCUSSION AND VOTE:  

Acceptance of a perpetual preservation restriction on 42-44 Shirley Street, Roxbury, MA to fulfill a requirement of the Community Preservation Act Funding that supported acquisition of the property by the Shirley-Eustis House Association.
