Innovation and Technology Summer Internships

Update: The deadline to submit application for the 2023 main City of Boston internship program has passed.

Internships are an opportunity to make an impact on Boston residents. We are looking for interns that are thoughtful students, interested in municipal government. As a member of our team, you will have a direct effect on how people view Boston. You’ll also help shape the future of our City.



You are not required to be a resident of Boston for this internship. However, you must be physically present at Boston City Hall during the week to perform intern tasks.

  • Deadline to submit an application: Friday, March 31, 2023, by 11:59 p.m.
  • Internship timeline: June 5 - August 31, 2023

We are excited that you are interested in joining our team. You’ll help us improve how the community interacts with our government online, and even in-person. In this section, you will find links to our 2023 Summer Internship Applications. Remember, you can apply to more than one fellowship with us.

Our interns play a vital role in creating tangible outcomes, including:

  • piloting different technologies and tools
  • connecting with constituents, and
  • testing innovative approaches to solving problems.

We’ll consider you for the role that best fits your experience and interests. In all of these roles, you will apply and develop your skills while working on high-impact, high-visibility projects.

Who can apply?

This internship is open to both undergraduate and graduate students in any major, as well as recent graduates.

What is the selection process?

Our selection process may vary depending on the volume of applicants. However, our standard process involves:

  • a resume and cover letter review
  • phone screens for a select group of candidates
  • applicable exercises, and
  • final group interviews.
How long is the internship?

This is an eight-week internship, with an expected start date of Monday, June 20, 2022. This date is subject to change. We will let you know the finalized start date if you’re picked.

Is this a paid internship?

Yes! We provide direct funding for a limited number of fellowships. We also encourage applicants with university or grant funding to apply. Please be proactive in communicating with us about the possibility of securing external funding for the summer. This is also a question you will encounter in our application.
