Emerging Climate Tech in the City
Boston is committed to removing barriers to innovation and foster a thriving climate tech ecosystem that advances the City's climate goals.
As Boston advances toward its 2030 and 2050 carbon neutrality and climate resilience goals, the City is expanding opportunities to support Boston's thriving climate tech ecosystem. From pilot programs to networking, visibility, and strategic partnerships, we're creating real-world conditions where innovative technologies can gain traction, demonstrate impact, and contribute to an equitable, sustainable future. Whether you're looking to test your solution, navigate procurement, or connect with City departments and community leaders, Boston is ready to partner with you!
Understanding the Needs
In December 2024, the Office of Emerging Technology released the Emerging Climate Tech Request for Information (RFI) to understand the current challenges facing climate tech startups and opportunities for the City to support the climate tech ecosystem while advancing the City's climate goals.
In response to the RFI, the City is pursuing several near-term goals, while continuing to shape longer-term strategies. These next steps include:
- Creating municipal pilot opportunities for real-world testing and validation
- Reducing procurement and permitting barriers to help integrate innovative solutions
- Expanding awareness, networking, and strategic partnerships to strengthen the climate tech ecosystem
Pilot Opportunities
Through this partnership, the City is interested in technologies that advance Boston's climate goals, with a focus for resilience-related technologies. Priority areas include urban heat mitigation and equitable cooling access, flood resilience, and technologies that address broader urban resilience challenges. We also welcome building technologies that support large-scale retrofitting and reduce embodied carbon.
More broadly, we are interested in collaborating with any companies that help advance Boston’s climate and equity goals.
